Grundon Quarry Extension Public Inquiry 31 July-2 August

Sand and Gravel Extraction

From July 31st to August 2nd the hearing for the appeal by Grundon to their application for an extension to their sand and gravel quarrying will be heard in the Newbury Council Chambers.

While Grundon state that there is no connection between this application and their application to build an incinerator, WBAGI is not convinced.
In order to maintain the opposition to the proposed Newbury Incinerator and reduce the opportunities for this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to continue to be eroded, we fell it is very important that this application is refused. We believe that the volume of local presence and opposition to the application demonstrated at the hearing will be taken into consideration. If there is a strong presence throughout the 3 days this will weigh significantly in our favour. We believe that this, along with a series of other measures that have also been organised offer our best shot in ensuring that this application is refused.
It is important that we demonstrate to the Planning Inspector the wider community’s support of the refusal decision, and as such would like to genersate increased support from local people attending the inquiry. If you could spare a couple of hours on Tuesday 31st July, Wednesday 1st or Thursday 2nd August to attend the inquiry and would like to help us demonstrate the strength of feeling in the community, your support would be most valuable. There is no requirement for you to say anything, just your presence, along with other concerned residents, will speak volumes.
The morning sessions will start at 10am and break for lunch at around 12.30pm. The afternoon sessions will start after lunch at around 1:30pm and last until 4:00 pm. The location of the inquiry will be:
The Council Chamber, Council Offices, Market Street, Newbury, RG14 5LD
We would greatly appreciate your support, if only for an hour or two during one of these sessions. Please let us know by 23rd July which session(s) you feel you may be able to attend.
Please reply by email to stating:
  • Your Name
  • Your Contact Tel No
  • Date(s) (31st/ 1st/ 2nd) you can attend
  • Time(s) you have available ( eg 2-4pm or state just am or pm)
We will then get back to you with the full details of times and venue, once these are available.
There are a number of reasons WBAGI feels that refusal of this planning application is important. Firstly, we feel it is important to stop another 51 acres of this AONB land:
Southern Extension Field
Turning into yet more of this:
Sand Quarry
Secondly, the quarry site is directly adjacent to the proposed site of the Grundon Incinerator. Should the planning refusal be overturned as a result of this Public Inquiry, it will provide Grundon with an ideal location to deposit their incinerator bottom ash. This will strengthen the case for Grundon when they inevitably take the refusal of their proposed Newbury Incinerator to Public Inquiry later this year.
